A modern VIN is the key. Find it on the dash, door jamb, or title.
Free VIN check · Free vehicle history lookup
Check the VIN before you buy the car.
People search for a free Carfax report when they want the story behind a used car. Start with the 17-character VIN, see what a decoder can tell you, then run a free VIN check on VinRizz.
Opens VinRizz at vinrizz.com. This is not an official CARFAX report.
A decoder reads the code. A history lookup searches later records.
VinRizz is where the free VIN lookup actually happens.
Why the search exists
A free Carfax report is what people type. A VIN check is the tool.
CARFAX is one well-known vehicle history brand. Shoppers use that name when they want accidents, title problems, odometer notes, and service history before they hand over money.
This site does not sell CARFAX reports and cannot give you one. It explains the VIN itself, and it points you to VinRizz for a free VIN check. VinRizz describes that lookup as a way to review accident history, service records, and title information when those records exist for the vehicle.
Coverage is never complete. A clean result means “nothing was found in the sources that were searched,” not “nothing ever happened.”
Three steps, then the lookup
Copy the VIN
Use all 17 characters. Skip I, O, and Q — those letters are not used, so a misread zero is a common mistake.
Know what you are asking
The first characters describe the manufacturer and equipment. Later records, if any, come from title, insurer, and service sources.
Run it on VinRizz
Open the free VIN check, paste the number, and read the result next to a real inspection of the car.
The VIN is a built-in label.
Positions 1–3 name the manufacturer, 4–8 describe the vehicle, 9 is a check digit, 10 is the model year, 11 is the plant, and 12–17 are the serial number.

Questions shoppers ask first
Is this a free official CARFAX report?
No. CARFAX reports come from CARFAX. This guide is independent, and the button sends you to VinRizz for a free VIN check. Treat the two as different products.
What can a free VIN check show?
A decoder can describe how the vehicle was built. A history lookup may add title brands, accident records, and service events. VinRizz says its check can include accident history, service records, and title information. If a source never reported an event, it will not appear.
Where is the VIN on the car?
Look at the lower driver-side corner of the windshield, the driver door jamb sticker, and the title or registration. The same 17 characters should match in each place.
Does a clean report mean the car is safe?
No. Use the report with a pre-purchase inspection, a test drive, and a look at the title in person. History tools fill gaps. They do not replace a mechanic.
